The mid-century American writer had a flair for the darkly dramatic,\u00a0exploring\u00a0humanity&#8217;s grotesque and profane elements\u00a0in ways that seemed shocking and inappropriate for a proper young lady from the South.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>In\u00a0\u201cWildcat,\u201d\u00a0O\u2019Connor and the real people from her life\u00a0appear\u00a0as characters\u00a0from\u00a0her stories\u00a0as they\u00a0blossom\u00a0in her mind.\u00a0But\u00a0while\u00a0it\u2019s\u00a0admirable that the script tries to deviate from the episodic, chronological constraints of the\u00a0traditional biopic,\u00a0these sequences\u00a0end up\u00a0feeling\u00a0distracting and distancing.\u00a0Most feature Laura Linney as both O\u2019Connor\u2019s real-life mother, Regina, and a series of bluntly racist Southern stereotypes.\u00a0Among the other supporting players in the film\u2019s\u00a0impressively\u00a0deep bench is Steve Zahn as a one-armed man\u00a0(inspired by a gentleman she sees at a train station)\u00a0and Rafael Casal as\u00a0a charismatic, tattooed drifter.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>These flights of fancy are wildly over-the-top, with gifted actors offering their versatility in the service of obnoxious, eccentric caricatures.\u00a0Some of these portrayals are so hammy and mannered it\u2019ll\u00a0make you wince.\u00a0Maya Hawke herself, so strong in recent years in \u201cStranger Things\u201d and \u201cAsteroid City,\u201d shows a great deal of range\u2014so much so that you wish the fantasy sequences offered her more nuanced material.\u00a0These\u00a0segments\u00a0never fully gel with the real-life moments\u00a0from O\u2019Connor\u2019s life, as she\u00a0struggles with lifelong illness and the frustration of feeling like she never truly belongs.\u00a0A later interlude involving \u201cLicorice Pizza\u201d star Cooper Hoffman as a traveling Bible\u00a0salesman\u00a0comes closest to achieving a real sense of tension and danger, as\u00a0it\u2019s\u00a0pitched in a lower key and plays out a little longer than the rest.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>What\u2019s more intriguing is the inner conflict that torments O\u2019Connor: her\u00a0yearning\u00a0to\u00a0achieve the\u00a0grace\u00a0of\u00a0her\u00a0Catholic faith, even as she explores\u00a0her blasphemous creative instincts. Lying in bed, dying of lupus\u00a0at her family\u2019s Georgia farm, she beseeches a priest (Liam Neeson\u00a0in\u00a0a brief\u00a0cameo)\u00a0to help her navigate this spiritual divide. It\u2019s a welcome moment of quiet, and Maya Hawke makes\u00a0O\u2019Connor\u2019s\u00a0anguish feel immediate and true.
