She follows a handful of conductors from various points on the globe as they\u00a0get ready\u00a0for their big moment on the\u00a0Paris\u00a0stage.\u00a0But within this traditional structure,\u00a0she\u2019s\u00a0chosen her subjects well. They have a variety of experiences,\u00a0personalities, and\u00a0home lives that inform their art.\u00a0<\/p>\n
And make no mistake, conducting is an art, one that allows for\u00a0a wide range of\u00a0dramatic\u00a0expression and individual interpretation. \u201cMaestra\u201d leaves us in awe of everything conductors must do at once, from knowing the\u00a0intricate pieces\u00a0intimately before they\u00a0even\u00a0step on the stage to connecting with every single musician\u00a0to\u00a0get the best possible performance out of them.\u00a0It\u00a0requires a\u00a0lot of detail-oriented plate-spinning\u00a0under intense scrutiny and pressure\u2014thorough preparation, coupled with the ability to\u00a0improvise. Contreras introduces us to five women: Zoe\u00a0Zeniodi, a fierce Greek who laments having to leave her twin son and daughter for weeks at a time to conduct in New Mexico; Tamara\u00a0Dworetz, a chatty American who\u00a0ponders balancing her professional ambitions with her desire to have a child with her husband;\u00a0Ustina\u00a0Dubitsky, a Ukrainian\u00a0mother\u00a0who\u2019s competing with a heavy heart\u00a0as she follows the Russian invasion of her country from afar; Anna\u00a0Su\u0142kowska-Migo\u0144, a Polish\u00a0prodigy in her mid-20s who\u2019s competing for the first time; and\u00a0M\u00e9lisse\u00a0Brunet,\u00a0a Frenchwoman who teaches at the University of Iowa\u00a0and is returning to Paris with memories of a traumatic past.
